I love movie theaters.
In Tallahassee we have four, AMC (the expensive one), Governor’s Square (the half ass one), Miracle 5 (the art theater), and Movies 8 (the cheap one).
When I was in college, Movies 8 was the place where you went because the movies were $1.00 and they had these crappy hot dogs for $1.00 so if you were broke (which we were) you could go have a night for under 5 bucks. And for what you were paying for you got about the same quality experience (if not better) than the half ass full price theater that was closer to campus. All of that was due to the guy who ran the place, Hal. Hal is a serious theater guy. He’s been in the business forever. He made sure his people knew what they were doing and the place was kept up really well for years. And the prices stayed low for years until he finally relented and raised the price to $2.00. And when he went to $3.00 it came with the promise that they would get movies sooner.
Then a couple years ago Movies 8 was bought by Cinema Holdings and they promptly ran the place into the ground. They fired most of the staff and replaced them with these dumb kids that didn’t know what they were doing and didn’t care. The films were usually damaged and were never put together right. They stopped buying things like actual posters and box office signs and tickets. They got rid of all the old school video games and replaced them with those prize machines that just rip people off. And they don’t ever clean anything. Ever. And then they had the nerve to raise prices.
It got so bad that seeing a $5.00 matinee at AMC was way better than seeing a $3.50 movie at Movies 8. For the extra buck and a half you get to sit in a clean theater with staff that’s actually helpful.
But, now Hal is coming back. The theater changes hands on May 15 and the official grand re opening is May 20. The 5 day transition is mostly just to clean the place. I have all kinds of chill bumps and tears of joy. I’m gonna be able to go spend a day at the movies and not feel like I need a shower after. I can wait to see a 3 star movie in a theater where I can relax and chill and be OK with people talking because I only paid 3 bucks to get in. Thank you Jesus for bringing back Hal.
So, in celebration of this grand event I am proposing that we shoot to sell out this theater on the 20th so that Hal knows how much we appreciate him and the care he puts into that theater. Put the 20th on your calendar and then share this to everyone you know in Tallahassee. And the best part is that since most of the college students are gone, it will be locals packing out the theater. Not that I have a problem with college students, but businesses don’t survive without local support and that’s what they need to see.
Ok, so right now before you forget, mark your calendar for MAY 20, share this to people you know in Tallahassee and then, and this is the important bit, GO TO A MOVIE AT MOVIES 8 ON MAY 20.
I’ll see you there.
